Pet Travel, Dog Shipping, Pet Transportation & Immigration Rules Italy – Italy Pet Passport & Quarantine Information

Your pet should be identified with a microchip that meets ISO standards 11784/11785. This is a 15 digit ISO compliant microchip that operates at 134.2 kHz. If your pet was vaccinated prior to microchip insertion, your pet must be revaccinated after insertion.

If your pet does not have the ISO microchip then the owner must provide their own scanner.

Your pet must be accompanied by the bi-lingual certificate of the country you are entering as prescribed by rule EU 998. This pet passport must show that the pet has been vaccinated against rabies and certain other diseases by a licensed veterinarian at least 21 days prior to travel.

NOTE: You will find information on obtaining the official EU form 998 veterinary certificate and the instructions for taking your pet into Czech Republic at the end of this document.

RESTRICTIONS: Unvaccinated pets (dogs and cats only) under 3 months old may enter an EU Country, but there are additional regulations that must be met. Certain aggressive breeds of dogs are prohibited from entry.

Pets entering an EU Country for commercial purposes require additional forms and different rules apply.

The pet must have a serological (blood titre) test performed at least 90 days prior to entering the country. This test must be performed at an approved laboratory.

Failure to comply with these regulations will not only mean that the pet is refused entry but that the relevant authority in consultation with an authorized vet can decide to return the pet home, or place the pet in quarantine at the expense of the owner or natural person responsible for pet; or as a last resort, without financial compensation, put the pet down where the return trip home or quarantine cannot be envisaged.

All other pets (birds, invertebrates, tropical fish, reptiles, amphibia, mammals such as rodents and rabbits) are not subject to the regulations in respect of the anti-rabies vaccination but may have to meet other requirements as to a limit on the number of animals and a certificate to accompany them in respect of other diseases. Owners traveling with pet’s other than dogs, cats and ferrets are strongly advised to seek further information from the relevant authority of their country and/or that of the country of destination.

All of the Countries of the EU have adopted the new veterinary certificate that meets EU rule 998 This form differs from the International Veterinary Certificate issued by Veterinarians in the United States.
